If one thing rings true it’s that most people love a good project. Something to devote time to, something to work on, and something that leads to a glorious result. For 2021 you may have already tried the personal fitness grind (unsuccessfully) and now you’re looking for something new to spend your time doing. Why not try restoring that classic car you’ve been meaning to get to?
But, before you grab a wrench and a positive attitude, Toyota of Clermont is here with some handy tips to consider first.
Is Your Classic Car Actually Worth Restoring?
Classic cars are full of stories and endless possibilities. While it may be the most expensive hobby around (unless you’re a gem collector or something), it’s well worth it when you see the end result. But, because this hobby is so expensive when it comes to both money and time, there’s a lot to consider before you dive right into shopping for OEM steering wheels and lug nuts.
What Do You Want to do with the Car?
To fully restore a Clermont classic car you’re going to need to make sure you don’t have a shortage of both cash and time. Before you dive in, ask yourself what you intend to do with the car once you’re finished with the project. Will it become part of your collection? Do you plan on selling it? Or maybe giving it as a gift? Or something else? All these reasons are plausible and you can make the argument for each one. But, some conclusions are more easily reached than others. If you’re planning on keeping it for yourself or gifting it, restoring it is a no brainer and expense clearly isn’t a concern. If you’re planning on selling you’re going to want to make sure you can actually make a profit on the overall restoration. If you can’t break even or make a profit, don’t pass go.
Original Condition of the Clermont Classic Car?
A restoration project can go anyway anytime and it’s important you know where you’re starting from. If you’re restoring a classic car from a rusted out body, you have quite a long way to go before you’re finished but you’ll likely start from a cheap point in the project. Purchasing a partially completed ride could be a bit costly, but you’ll be stuck with a lot less work to do over time.
Cost of Parts and Rarity?
Some classic cars are a bit more collectible than others. Depending on which Clermont car you’re looking to restore, finding the right parts may be easy or extremely difficult. Restoring a vintage Ford Mustang or a common driver car of the era will likely be pretty straightforward. A lot of copies were made and there’s an abundance of parts to choose from out there. But, something like a Toyota 2000GT will be very difficult as only a handful were made and parts are super scarce and expensive.
You should always keep these tips in mind if you plan on wading into the wide world of classic car restoration.
